Marzipan Babies

And now for something completely different.

A friend sent these pictures to me. These babies are made out of marzipan.

Marzipan is a paste made with ground almonds and sugar. It can be moulded into almost any shape you want, the shape is then sculpted and painted. The result is an edible decorative item.

These are amazing.....

I agree, they are beautiful, and someone has an amazing talent. (They look so real!) My problem is, um, the edible part? Please tell me they are only "technically" edible, because of their ingredients, and that people aren't actually eating these tiny baby sculptures. I'm thinking not, since they are painted... right? I just got hung up on the word edible (hungry right now, sorry)and as I scrolled down through the pictures, I was horrified at the idea of eating these almond/sugar babies.

P.S. Came here by way of MacStansbury- like your site. :)

They look realistic and everything, but there's something creepy about eating a miniature baby that looks almost lifelike.

don't think I could do it.

While I know you all are speaking in jest.....I don't think the person who made these cutie pies had the thought of eating them. LOLOL That would be morbid, indeed.

There I go again, using food references (cutie pies). Sheeeeez!

So pretty! Such an amazing talent. I can't imagine any one actually eating them but wouldn't they be adorable on a baby shower cake?

I heard that NARAL has cornered the market on marzipan babies and they are handing them out at Planned Parenthood to each woman who gets an abortion.

Yes, I know, very tasteless! ;-)

They're not made of Marzipan and they're not edible.

They're 2- to 5-inch sculptures created by artist Camille Allen (including some entries from her Shell Baby line of miniatures), and they're made from Prosculpt polymer clay and mohair. Definitely not the kind of thing most of us would find palatable.

They still look yummy though ! ;-)

I also think that the naral handing them out is farce. they cost too much and i doubt it highly.

I thought the marzipan babies were strange and scary too (as something to eat) and looked it up at snoop.com http://www.snopes.com/photos/arts/marzipan.asp. Snopes.com says the babies pictured are not made of marzipan, nor are they edible. They're 2 to 5 inch sculptures created by artist Camille Allen (including some entries from her Shell Baby line of miniatures), and they're made from Prosculpt polymer clay and mohair. Definitely not the kind of thing most of us would find palatable.
